Oh shark attack! How Fun! You know we hopefully all evolve!
Ok one more fun story: DC. May Day. I’m 13 and I want to go. My dad agrees as long as he can accompany me. Didn’t bother me at all we were pretty sybionic. Sp? Anywho he makes me this flag I requested and we went to the lawn and took positions. Thousands of people! A shot and mayhem broke loose! Cops and shields and hippies were running and screaming. I stood with my flag perfectly still and all cops spread around me. Unscathed. When they had all moved toward the monument there was one man there. My dad watching me from across the street.
Was The Atlantic always that way or were they co-opted?
I knew they'd become the main PR vehicle to promote the US war crime money-laundering machine in Ukraine – but were they always, as you describe, like a parallel government of the Cabal?
I remember being so impressed when I was 19 and I met a young Harvard grad who was only a few years older and she was writing for them. She was Jewish but had this name straight out of the 'Preppy Handbook', like "Muffy Humes" or something like that.
I was raised a radical Leftist so maybe I didn't know any better. I grew up thinking the NY Times was great, etc. Now, I know the NYT was always evil but it's become totally batsh¡t over the past decade, like all these NGO-subsidized publications. Even the so-called "Libertarian" Reason Magazine is now embarrassingly Woke.
The Atlantic was part of the era wherein numerous famous writers and poets believed in Marxist ideologies and fashioned themselves as the 'intellectualists'. The Magazine came out of Germany and went through various wars and various political ideologies including some Libertarian and some conservative. Interestingly, many of its owners and writers were Harvard grads - Harvard having adopted communism in the early 20th century. It appears its political aspiration are relatively new.
Humes - as in Brit Humes??
The media has been owned by the CIA for decades - beginning with Alan Dulles. Bad juju.
I have this guy Rick who emails me blurbs constantly - I think he might send things to you too. He mentioned your name. He came from the era of Dulles. Psychologist.
My background is a bit complicated. Army brat. Dad was a Spook - head of defense intel for Europe. Roswell. Nevada Nukes. But when we stationed back to the US in 1967 (I was 12) he went to the Pentagon. Shiitake hit the fan then about the Pentagon's infamous spending sprees. Thus the Pentagon has been rogue since before Kennedy. He, my dad, couldn't stand it so he retired Maj Gen and worked at a spy place in Langley, PRC. Tried to get me to join him.
I found her. Her nickname was "Muffin" but her real name is Alison Humes: https://school-sharp.com/teacher/uey3icw7ll1ce5dk. She's your age, which is 9 years older than I am. She also worked at Condé Nast, where I think my ex-husband (sep. 1988, div. 1994) still works, writing theater reviews for Vogue. His father was Adolph Green, who wrote all the MGM musicals with Betty Comden. My ex- went to Harvard, I went to Brown, so we were all radical Leftists. My Brazilian grandmother was a full-blown communist, who dated the head of the Longshoremen's Union in Santos (20 years her junior) after she divorced my grandfather.
I had no idea about any of this! I haven't really thought about her since I met her that one time in 1984, when she was visiting my neighbors downstairs from me when I was a student in Paris. They were Harvard guys, I think writing for The Paris Review. I'm not that smart but memory is like a steel trap. Muffin was quite traumatized and she was missing a thumb.
Years later, I used to go to George Plimpton's parties at his apartment on Sutton Place, where I met Steve Jobs before he made it big. He was so handsome but he exuded horrible a-hole vibes.
It was her mother who was Jewish, I think born in Russia, and who later married Nelson Aldrich Jr (as in Rockefeller), so her mother was known as Anna Lou Aldrich. Nelson wrote this great book, called 'Old Money: The Mythology of Wealth in America', which I read when it came out in '88.
All of these memories were triggered by you writing about The Atlantic. Hilarious.

Having worked for a 501(c)3, I was amazed at the salaries, whether the workers were there or not, and the waste of grant $ with no accountability.
